Aleknas are an anti-extension exercise, meaning that they are aiming to condition your abdominals to control extension of the spine. This thought process around abdominal training is based on using those muscles to absorb energy, which protects your structure (in this case your spine) and allows you to efficiently store that energy and then deploy it in the form of explosive movements.
